Special ISG - ANU Indonesia Project Travel Grants recipients

As part of the ANU Indonesia Project’s 60th anniversary celebrations, a special edition of the Indonesia Study Group (ISG) was convened to showcase the work of past recipients of the ANU Indonesia Project Travel Grant. This session celebrated not only the breadth of research supported by the grant but also how it has shaped scholarly and professional pathways dedicated to the study of Indonesia.

Chaired by Jennifer Donohoe, Director at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the session brought together four accomplished alumni who reflected on their research journeys and engaged with a shared theme of gender in contemporary Indonesia.

Jayne Fendyk (2023 grantee) presented her research on the role of feminist activism in the context of Indonesia’s anti-sexual violence law. Amara Steven (2017 grantee), an economist and current PhD candidate with the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre, turned to Indonesia’s maritime future, highlighting women’s participation in the country’s emerging Blue Economy. Bronwyn Beech Jones (2017 grantee), now an Assistant Lecturer at The University of Melbourne, shared her work on questions of scale in Indonesian gender history, reflecting on historiographical challenges and new directions for the field.

The event exemplified the Indonesia Project’s longstanding commitment to nurturing the next generation of Indonesianists, while fostering rich, critical discussions on gender, society, and development.
