Public Lecture with Dennis Richardson AC: Australia and Indonesia Relationship

The ANU Indonesia Project was honoured to host a special public lecture by Dennis Richardson AC, one of Australia’s most distinguished diplomats and public servants. Drawing on decades of experience at the highest levels of government—including serving as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Department of Defence—Richardson offered a rare and incisive perspective on the evolving relationship between Australia and Indonesia.

The lecture was formally opened by Professor Anthony Connolly, Dean of the College of Law, Governance and Policy, who highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue on regional cooperation. The session was chaired by Dr Elly Kent, Deputy Director of the ANU Indonesia Institute, who guided the discussion and facilitated audience engagement.

In his remarks, Richardson reflected on the strategic, economic, and cultural dimensions of the bilateral relationship, situating them within the broader shifts in regional and global affairs. He emphasised the resilience and depth of Australia–Indonesia ties, while also underscoring the challenges that lie ahead as both nations navigate geopolitical competition, climate change, and shifting economic landscapes.
